When you think of the word innovation, the first few things that pop into your mind are probably technology related. Even though that indeed is a major part of innovation, the social side might be even more important. Especially so in our current context. Bernice Dapaah’s Bamboo Bicycle is a prime example of this, as she’s improving lives of an entire population with a rather simply yet impactful concept.
As the name suggests, Bamboo Bicycles are mainly made out of bamboo. This sustainable mode of transport is beyond eco-friendly. For every bamboo plant cut, ten more are planted. The initiative also has a big impact on the indigenous inhabitants of Ghana. Not only does it offer a lot of job opportunities, but it also offers an affordable way of transport and the company even donates bikes to local communities. This makes these locals much more agile and allows them to move more freely across their respective region.
The bikes are booming indeed, Bernice is opening two more factories soon!
Keep kicking ass Bernice, we’re rooting for you.
