FEEL THE BURN/FREEZE
You’re hot then you’re cold, you’re yes then you’re no. Regulating your body heat is quite a challenge with the current change of weather every day. This week alone it was 18°C during the day, but almost freezing at night here in Amsterdam. As a result of this, it can be hard to decide whether you have to put on your thick winter coat, or if an early spring jacket will suffice. If only you could have a nifty accessory that helps you navigate this hot ‘n cold dilemma…
Meet Embr, a sleek wristband created to balance your body temperature using a cooling/warming plate. Studies show that how you perceive temperature, has more to do with the environment you’re in rather than your own body heat. Embr chose for a wristband because the skin on your wrist is highly sensitive, allowing you to feel the change in temperature more intensely. When you’re burning up, the plate mimics the feeling of holding your wrist under cold water and during colder times it feels like you wrap your hands around a warm cup of tea. How delightful!
There are different modes you can set up with Embr. The extended mode makes sure you feel cool or warm for over 30 minutes, while there also is a quick mode that gets you instant results for 3 minutes. The band uses a wave system, meaning that the temperature constantly shifts slightly between higher and lower temperatures, meaning the product compliments our natural system. You can even adjust the temperature up to 5°C both ways.
Using the way our bodies manage inner warmth and turning it into a tech gadget, is what we call bio-mimicry. This loosely translates to looking at processes in nature and implementing those mechanisms into smart devices like Embr. Our body is able to survive harsh weather conditions, so why not use these innate tricks to make our lives just a little bit more comfortable. With that being said, the design does look a tad bulky, so it might take some getting used to.
In these precarious weather conditions, it proves to be difficult to dress right for every occasion. We might just order an Embr for our colleagues until mother nature gets it together. ;)
