MAKE YOUR OWN MASTERS
Denmark is known for the high quality of education they offer, and when you’re a citizen of the European Union, it’s completely free too. However, only an hour of a flight away, in England, education could cost you upwards of £40.000,-. This raises some questions like: why does education seem to be designed for the elite; how does a country like Denmark even have free education, and how can you avoid outrageous debts when you want to have an education in a country like England?
Stacie Woolsey has got you covered! Stacie is an English, now graduated, design student who found herself struggling while looking for a master’s degree. There was a lack of programs that suited her educational goals, and the ones that did were way out of her budget. Instead of going the conventional route, she decided to create her very own and completely free master’s programme: “Make Your Own Masters” (MYOM).
The first step was to find projects and people she could learn from. She contacted four London based designers she looked up to and asked them to send her a brief for her to work on in the upcoming 3-4 months. Rather than a financial incentive, she asked her mentoring designers to write her recommendation letters. By collecting these, she could show future employers her skill and experience, rather than grades. Also, instead of trying to get her masters accredited by an institution, she opted for peer-based reviews on the work she’d created.
Stacie plans to take on ten “students” whom she will guide in making their own masters. Her initiative could revolutionise the entire educational system, as it opens up the possibility to study for everyone nevertheless of income. One could wonder whether or not this opens up the possibility for companies to take advantage of this free labour, but we’re sure that MYOM will find a workaround or lifehack for that as well.
Last week we had the pleasure of working with this bright mind, as she assisted us during one of our ideation raves. We believe it’s super inspiring how she is single handedly revolutionizing the outdated system of education, one student at a time. We can’t wait to find out what the future, and Stacie/MYOM specifically, have in store for us.
Deconstruct to reconstruct!
